Aion Launch … success?
I've now been party to two and a half MMO launches. It's been a year and some since Warhammer released but I can't say I had any problems with that launch. At least nothing that immediately stands out. The half would be Champions Online since I never did actually stay through release but the Open Beta was a huge mess for me. Then comes Aion. Queues aside this was a very smooth headstart and launch.
The pre-select was genius. Patching from the beta version to the headstart/launch version was seamless. I think the success of this was mostly due to the fact that NCSoft decided to remove GameGuard from startup. I know that was giving me issues the first time I tried to log in during a closed beta weekend.
So other than this every time you log in, it's been a smooth and successful launch no matter what those naysayers are spouting:
Though I will say that the queue times have settled down on my server. But only slightly. It's no longer a 7 hour wait, but a meager 2-3.
People are getting around this by setting up a personal store and then just leaving themselves logged in. This has definitely contributed to greater queue times than normal. And I'm not immune to using this cheat either. I will admit that if I had to leave the computer for a small amount of time (and I mean a small amount) then I'd set up shop and walk away. I always made sure I had things that needed selling before doing that in order to fool myself into thinking I wasn't really cheating the system.
NCSoft's Ayase has been Tweeting to let us know that the personal store issue has been brought up and they're currently looking into solutions for the long queue times. If things haven't smoothed out in a week or so after launch has settled into a normal flow, then maybe I'll worry about the queues.

And of course, right in the middle of the post I get disconnected. Measures put in by NCSoft though saved my position and I was able to skip over the queue. Whew.
Aion Quick Tips.
Aion's open beta has ended but I only have to wait 6 days before Headstart begins!
Quick note: If you've pre-ordered, NCSoft has posted an update about the pre-select. Looks like you can only create/save two characters. Two is better than none so I'm still happy.
Here are some things I learned while playing the beta events (both closed and open beta):
- Gathering: Do it as often as possible. You don't have to go out of your way, there's plenty Aria and Mela plants (Elyos) while running between quests. Not only will this help you once you ascend but it gives you XP as well. There are two gathering quests in the starting zone, the last of which you'll need to at least be level 15 Gathering. Do them, they're easy XP and you'll be in those areas anyways. The level of your Gathering skill will determine what level your Extract Vitality skill will be after you ascend.
- Collection Quests: There were issues with collection items where you'd click on the item but nothing would happen. I had read that it was due to server lag (though with the beta forums now closed I can't confirm that). What I usually found was if you hovered your mouse over the item and no name popped up, you'll most likely find that you can't collect it. Some example photos:
- Level 9 Ascension Quest: Some people are saying to do the ascension quest which is automatically given to you as soon as you turn 9 because it will basically give you a free level. Meaning, once you complete the whole quest chain, they give you enough XP to bump you to level 10. This means though that you'll end up in the city (either Sanctum or Pandemonium) and you must then spend kinah to teleport back to your starting zone. You don't have to go back if you choose to just continue forward. By the time I reach level 9, I usually only have 2-3 quest chains to finish which might take me 15-20 minutes so I just finish those first. I'm in no hurry.
- Titles (Elyos): By completing the Request of the Elim quest chain you gain the title: Tree-Hugger. By completing the Where's Tutty? and Avenging Tutty quest chains you gain the title: Animal Lover. By completing all the quests in Poeta (Elyos) you'll gain the title: Poeta's Protector.
This is going to be a long 6 days. =)
Aion Open Beta!
Aion's open beta is in full swing and I couldn't be more excited. The first couple days were rough because of lag issues, but it seems NCSoft has gotten that under control.
In the closed betas I played on the Asmodian side so I didn't overplay the Elyos zones. That self control went out the window with the start of the open beta. I couldn't help myself. Of course I made the excuse that I wanted to have my character looks down so when the pre-select rolls around on the 18th I was prepared.
I've applied (and been accepted) to a legion that sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. I've never joined a guild before a game was even out (not that I've had much opportunity to do so) and I'm hoping this avoids the problem I had in WAR. Being lonely is no fun.
Here are a few screenshots of my time in the open beta so far (all of them from the cut scenes that play out through the game):
